NO. 235 JESUS AS THE TYPE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

TEXT: MATTHEW 12: 15- 22 15 But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from thence: and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all;

16 And charged them that they should not make him known:

17 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,

18 Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; me beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles.

19 He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets.

20 A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory.

21 And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.

22 Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw. (KJV)

When we see the life of Jesus through the Bible, what we are clearly taught is that the life of Lord Jesus in flesh is the type of the work of the Holy Spirit in the latter days.

We do not know if such an idea meets the present theology. But it seems that the life of Lord Jesus as the type of the Holy Spirit is repeatedly told in the Bible. And so we would like to learn that.

It may be very difficult in the present Christian Church to make a speech such as that Jesus is a Person like this, or the Holy Spirit is a Person like that. What I say is that there are many hysteric people to say, gIt is out of the doctrine of the Trinity, and heretical,h if they hear some thing concerning these topics a little different from the present theology. But even so, we cannot ignore what the Bible clearly says, if we stand as the servants of the Lord in this day.

Even the name of Lord Jesus, Jesus Christ, suggests the Holy Spirit.

For, Christ means the Anointed One as is well known, and oil is the metaphor of the Spirit, the Holy Spirit. So, when we see the life of this Person, we will be able to understand what kind of Person the Holy Spirit is.

The Lord expressed in the past concerning the relation between Him and the Holy Spirit as Comforter and another Comforter as below.

JOHN 14: 16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; (KJV)

Therefore, there is the special relation between the life of Lord Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

The Bible never wrote concerning the relation between Moses and the Holy Spirit as Comforter and another Comforter, nor between Abraham and the Holy Spirit as so.

Then, we understand it good to pay attention to the life of the seen Person, Lord Jesus, in order to know the unseen Person, the Holy Spirit.

And, the Bible tells that this Holy Spirit is actually the Spirit of Lord Jesus Himself as below.

JOHN 16: 16- 22 16 A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.

17 Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while , and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?

18 They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? We cannot tell what he saith.

19 Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do ye inquire among themselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me?

20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.

21 A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.

22 And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you. (KJV)

It in fact tells about Lord Jesus coming as the Holy Spirit, that the Lord said here, gAgain, a little while, and ye shall see me.h That is why the Lord said, gI am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.h

Well, with the above thing in our mind, letfs look at the text.

15 gBut when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from thence: and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all;h

The Lord did the work of healing here.

16 gAnd charged them that they should not make him known:h

And then, the Lord did mysterious thing. It is gHe charged them that they should not make him known.h This is mysterious. Did Lord Jesus want to be an unknown Man? But, in spite of that, He left from Nazareth, for Jerusalem, and accomplished the entry into Jerusalem welcomed by many multitudes. These facts contradict that. We do not know whether then He wanted to be known of the people or not.

We can, however, understand it, if we think the life of the Lord as the type of the Holy Spirit, from another point of view. For, one of the characteristics of the Holy Spirit is that the work is not recognized or known of the people. The Holy Spirit has been performing many works in the past and the present. But, He is a modest Person and does not claim the works. And so many people do not notice Him.

For example, such a thing like this happened. Some brother was about to be laid off for the restructuring. Then, he prayed to the Lord, gKeep my job somehow.h Then, the Person of the Holy Spirit worked and his job was kept.

But, this time, though the Holy Spirit surely worked, this brother did not notice that because of such an idea entering his mind, gBecause of his superior ability, the company recognized him.h Like this, the work of this Person is not noticed.

17 gThat it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,

18 Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; me beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles.h

My spirit means the Holy Spirit, and it is written here about the character of the Holy Spirit.

19 gHe shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets.h

It shows He is not self-assertive to strive, gHe shall not strive.h Nor cry means He does not announce His works. It also shows He is not a Person to appeal Himself in rough voice, gNeither shall any man hear his voice in the streets.h

20 gA bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory.h

Even if we are like bruised reed and injured, He will heal us.

And, He is not a Person to put off the fire soon in anger, though we are like men as gsmoking flaxh with the fire of the Holy Spirit going off. Rather, He will arrange to rekindle it in endurance. He arranges for judgment to victory in us.

22 gThen was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw.h

It is written here gThen was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw.h This of course shows an individual Lord Jesus to be wonderful Person, but not only that, what kind of Person the Holy Spirit is. Therefore, we know that even though we are blind not to be able to see spiritually to differentiate the Holy Spirit from devils or how to read the Bible our eyes will be opened if we ask and seek the Holy Spirit.

And, even though we are dumb not to be able to say a word gGodh before men, we know we will be healed of our infirmity and be strengthened.

Lord Jesus who came as Man 2000 years ago for three and a half years to help the people was the wonderful Helper, but He is a Being far both historically and geographically. But, if we know this Person is the type of another Helper, the Person of the Holy Spirit, and His life is to make us understand the work of the Holy Spirit, our eyes will be opened.

Letfs do the will of the Lord in the end time.

End.
